I climbed the Mount 200 times!

Have you ever been somewhere and you just feel so… alive? Like it fills every inch of your soul and when you sit there all your ‘problems’ and ‘worries’ just fade away?

Well the Mount Summit is that place for me. Not just the summit itself… but the journey to the top. That climb has healed and changed me in many ways.

Chances are that you or someone you know has climbed the Mount at least once, if not multiple times…

Well how about 200 times over a year?

Crazy right? Probably…

This is me! I am crazy! 😉 

I never started out with a 200 climb goal in mind for 2019. It just kind of progressed to that. I love climbing the Mount and when I moved to the main street of Mount Maunganui in Oct 2018 I ended up climbing the Mount a few times a week just because I love it. I mean it was so close and convenient, I decided to make the most of it while I was there.

At the beginning of 2019 I split my weeks exercise up between the gym and the Mount. I did roughly 3 gym sessions a week and 2 Mount climbs. I documented this on a calendar to visually motivate me and keep track. 

In March I noticed I had climbed the Mount a fair few times and thought… why not set a climb goal! I decided I would do 150 climbs before the end of 2019.

At this point of time I did think this goal was quite unachievable. It seemed to far away from where I was sitting (22 climbs). But I decided to commit and I then split the 150 climbs down to a weekly climb number target and then scheduled the days I would do it. #preparationiskey

August 2nd came around and I hit climb #100. I couldn’t believe it.. mid winter, walking up the Mount at 5.30am in the dark with my head torch day after day and I had finally hit triple digits!

I decided on this day that I would change my goal to 200 climbs! That gave me 5 months to get 100 more climbs… basically 5 climbs a week (and still gym at least twice a week). I know… I was crazy! 😉 

Fast forward 5 months and on the 20th December 2019 I hit climb #200!

It was a pretty surreal feeling! But I did it.. I set out to achieve a goal that seemed so far fetched and I had put in the hard work and completed it. 

Don’t get me wrong though… it wasn’t always easy. 

There were many mornings that I didn’t want to get up at 5am and make my way to the base of the Mount to do another climb. Some days my legs were SO sore from the gym that climbing the Mount was a real struggle. There were many cold winter mornings when I thought I was crazy climbing in the dark with my head torch at 5.30am and would have preferred to stay tucked up in bed. And there were many times I looked at my climb goal and just couldn’t see myself getting there. 

BUT I never gave up!

I also did things to keep me motivated. 

I talked about my climb goal all the time with friends and work colleagues. I documented the climbs on a calendar to keep track. I posted each climb on snapchat and Instagram to keep me accountable and help inspire others to move their body. I also climbed at 5.30am so I could see the beautiful sunrises and quite often climbed at night to catch the sunset – so good for the soul!

Below are photos and ‘proof’ of each climb – purely to inspire you to move your body too and maybe even motivate you to come over and climb the Mount when you next have the opportunity. 

Nature is so good for the soul and the view from the top is well worth the Journey.
